Description
The Neozygitaceae family comprises a group of highly specialized entomopathogenic fungi within the order Entomophthorales. Unlike pathogens that attack crops directly, these fungi function as biological control agents by targeting specific insect and mite pests, playing a vital role in maintaining ecological balance within agroecosystems.
The primary hosts for many Neozygites species are spider mites, particularly the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae). The fungus initiates infection by attaching to the host's cuticle, penetrating the body cavity, and proliferating internally, which ultimately exhausts the host's nutrients and causes rapid mortality.
Symptoms of an infection include a sudden drop in pest activity followed by the characteristic mummification of the host body. Under conditions of high humidity, the cadavers may become covered in a visible layer of conidia, which facilitates the horizontal transmission of the fungus to healthy individuals in the vicinity.
Environmental conditions are paramount for the spread and development of these fungi. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures provide the necessary environment for sporulation and germination. When these conditions are met, the fungi can trigger rapid epizootics, significantly reducing pest pressure without the need for synthetic intervention.
Integrated pest management (IPM) strategies leverage these fungi by creating microclimates conducive to their survival. Farmers can encourage the proliferation of these natural enemies by avoiding the indiscriminate use of chemical pesticides that could harm the beneficial fungal population, thereby sustaining long-term natural control of mite outbreaks.
