Description

Neozygites is a genus of entomopathogenic fungi belonging to the order Entomophthorales. These fungi are specialized natural enemies of arthropods, particularly spider mites (Tetranychidae), making them essential components of biological control programs in modern sustainable agriculture.

These fungi target a wide range of host plants infested by mites, including soybeans, cotton, greenhouse vegetables, and various ornamental crops. By attacking the mites directly, Neozygites reduces the pressure of pests without causing any physiological damage to the host plant itself.

Symptoms of an infection include a sudden decline in pest activity, lethargy, and eventual death of the mites. Upon close inspection, the infected mites often show a discoloration of the body, and under humid conditions, a characteristic layer of fungal spores develops on the surface, facilitating further transmission.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the efficacy of Neozygites. High relative humidity and moderate temperatures are critical for spore germination and the development of epizootics.
