It is widely recognized in agriculture not as a plant pathogen, but as a vital biological control agent that naturally regulates populations of spider mites, specifically the two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae), which causes significant damage to various crops.
The host range of this fungus primarily encompasses agricultural pests such as spider mites, which infest soybean, cotton, and various vegetable crops. By infecting the pests, the fungus prevents large-scale outbreaks that would otherwise require intensive chemical intervention, making it a critical component of sustainable agricultural systems.
Symptoms of infection in spider mites are characterized by a gradual loss of mobility and a change in color from the typical greenish-red to a pale yellow or brown. As the fungus consumes the mite's internal tissues, the exoskeleton becomes fragile.
