The Nephromataceae family is not a plant disease but a taxonomic group of lichens, which are complex symbiotic organisms consisting of fungi and photobionts like green algae or cyanobacteria. In agricultural and forestry practice, they are often misidentified as pathogens due to their crust-like appearance on tree bark.

These lichens function as epiphytes, meaning they thrive on the surface of tree trunks and branches without drawing nutrients or water from the host plant. They do not possess root systems or haustoria, which are characteristic of parasitic organisms that would cause plant disease or decay.

The morphology of Nephromataceae includes foliose, often brownish or grayish thalli with distinct spore-bearing apothecia located at the margins of the lobes.
