Neurospora (lat. Neurospora) is a genus of ascomycete fungi commonly known as red bread mold. While these organisms are widely recognized in scientific research as model organisms, in agricultural practice, they can act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the quality and health of various crops and stored produce.
The pathogen is primarily characterized as a saprotrophic fungus that thrives on organic matter. It aggressively colonizes plant tissues, especially when they have been stressed by environmental factors, and utilizes a complex array of enzymes to degrade structural components such as cellulose and starch within the host plant.
Crop hosts include various cereals, corn, and sugarcane. While field infections occur under high humidity conditions, the most significant damage is observed during post-harvest storage, where the fungus can rapidly overtake grains or sugar-rich plant parts if the storage environment is not properly controlled.
Symptoms of Neurospora infection include:
- Development of dense, cotton-like mycelial mats.
- Bright orange or pinkish coloration due to the production of asexual spores.
- Softening and discoloration of infected plant tissues.
- Musty odor indicating active fungal metabolism.
Effective management requires a multi-faceted approach focusing on environmental control and hygiene. Preventing the development of this fungus involves maintaining low moisture levels in storage silos, ensuring proper aeration, and applying appropriate seed treatments to reduce initial inoculum pressure. Frequent monitoring of stored commodities is essential to prevent rapid spread.
