Nidularia deformis is a species of bird's nest fungus that functions as a wood-decay agent in various horticultural and forest environments. While it is primarily a saprotroph, feeding on decaying organic matter, its presence on living trees indicates a compromise in the tree's defensive barriers, potentially leading to long-term structural deterioration of wood tissues.
This fungus typically targets woody perennials, stumps, and fallen branches. In agricultural settings, it is commonly found on fruit trees that have suffered from frost damage, mechanical pruning wounds, or neglect. By breaking down lignin, Nidularia deformis contributes to the softening and degradation of the internal structures of the tree, which can weaken limbs over time.
The most visible symptoms include the appearance of small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies, known as peridioles, which often cluster on the bark. As the infestation progresses, bark around the affected area may show signs of unnatural swelling or cracking. In severe cases, the bark begins to lose its integrity, providing an entry point for secondary pathogens, such as parasitic bacteria or other invasive fungi.
The environmental requirements for the proliferation of this fungus are high relative humidity and temperatures conducive to fungal growth, typically between 15°C and 25°C. Spores are disseminated by rain splashes or wind, making damp, overcrowded garden plots particularly susceptible to colonization. The presence of dense canopy cover can further exacerbate the risk by trapping moisture on bark surfaces.
To effectively manage and prevent the spread of this fungus, practitioners should focus on rigorous garden sanitation. This includes the immediate removal of deadwood, pruning of infected branches, and proper disposal of woody debris. Applying antifungal treatments to large pruning wounds and maintaining optimal plant vigor through correct fertilization and irrigation are the best strategies to keep trees resistant to colonization.
