The Nigrogranaceae family comprises a group of fungal pathogens classified within the Dothideomycetes class. These organisms often act as necrotrophs or saprotrophs, affecting the vegetative parts and fruits of various plants. Accurate identification of these fungi requires mycological analysis, as their morphological traits can often resemble those of other common foliar spot diseases.

The primary diseases caused by members of this family include leaf spots, stem rots, and necrosis. The pathogen typically enters plant tissues through stomata or mechanical wounds, subsequently initiating enzymatic degradation of cell walls, which leads to tissue necrosis and severe damage to the plant's structural integrity.

The host range includes both cereal crops and a wide variety of dicotyledonous plants, such as vegetables and woody species. The pathogen most frequently affects plants that are already stressed by unfavorable environmental conditions, such as drought or excessive soil moisture, making agricultural management a key factor in disease prevention.

Symptoms of the infection involve the appearance of dark, often nearly black spots surrounded by a chlorotic halo. Over time, these spots enlarge and coalesce, resulting in premature wilting and defoliation. Under high humidity conditions, a visible layer of fungal spores may appear on the lesions, facilitating the rapid spread of the infection throughout the field.
