Cold injury is a non-parasitic physiological disorder of plants caused by exposure to temperatures below the optimal growth threshold but above the freezing point. Unlike freezing damage, cold injury involves the disruption of membrane fluidity and protein synthesis, which essentially halts the plant's metabolic activity and energy transport systems.
Corn is significantly prone to cold injury during the early vegetative stages, particularly during emergence and the first few weeks after planting. When soil temperatures remain consistently low, the corn seedlings fail to develop properly, resulting in poor stand establishment and leaving the plants highly susceptible to opportunistic soil-borne pathogens.

Utilizing starter fertilizers and bio-stimulants that support root development can help seedlings overcome mild cold stress.
