Nitschkia is a genus of ascomycetous fungi that primarily functions as a saprotroph, decomposing dead or decaying woody tissues. While often classified as a weak parasite, it targets trees that are already suffering from environmental stress, mechanical injuries, or poor vigor, colonizing their bark and underlying layers.

This fungus typically affects various broad-leaved trees and shrubs, including species such as alder, birch, and several fruit-bearing trees. It rarely attacks healthy, vigorously growing plants, as they possess effective natural barriers that prevent the fungus from establishing a colony on their surface.

The visual signs of a Nitschkia infection are characterized by the appearance of numerous small, black, cluster-forming perithecia on the surface of the bark.
