Nitzschia is a genus of diatoms that, in the context of commercial greenhouse production, functions as a problematic biological contaminant. While these organisms are not traditional pathogens like fungi or bacteria, their ability to colonize the surface of growing media and hydroponic systems causes significant stress to horticultural crops by preventing proper aeration and nutrient absorption.
The causative agent involves the proliferation of microscopic diatom cells that thrive on moist surfaces under light exposure. This type of infestation is considered an ecological disturbance where the algae form a dense, biological film, creating a physical barrier between the growing environment and the plant root system, often leading to secondary physiological issues.
Various crops, particularly nursery seedlings and plants grown in soilless substrates or hydroponic setups, are susceptible to Nitzschia. Initial symptoms include the emergence of a rusty-brown or greenish slimy film on the substrate surface. As the algae colony matures, it forms a thick, consolidated crust that hampers effective irrigation and restricts the respiratory gas exchange of the roots.
The development and spread of Nitzschia are driven by excessive humidity, constant surface moisture, inadequate ventilation, and high light intensity. Optimal temperatures for their rapid expansion range from 18°C to 25°C. These conditions are commonly found in commercial greenhouses, especially where automated irrigation systems keep the surface of the medium perpetually damp.
The harm caused by this organism includes reduced plant vigor, chlorosis, and increased risk of root rot due to the anaerobic conditions created beneath the algal mat. Effective prevention and control measures include optimizing irrigation schedules, improving greenhouse ventilation, implementing regular surface cultivation, and using approved algaecides to disinfect water systems and substrates.
