Nodulosphaeria dolioloides is a fungal plant pathogen belonging to the Dothideomycetes class. This fungus acts as a necrotrophic parasite, primarily affecting various cereal crops by colonizing the vegetative parts of the plants as they reach maturity or reside on crop residues.
The host range of this pathogen includes essential cereals such as wheat, barley, and rye. It typically targets the stems, leaf sheaths, and sometimes the spikelets of the plants, causing structural degradation and weakening the plant's overall health during the grain-filling stage.
The visual symptoms of an infection include the appearance of small, dark, sub-epidermal fungal structures known as pseudothecia. These structures often emerge in dense groups, causing the infected plant tissues to turn greyish-brown. Over time, the affected areas show distinct signs of necrosis and brittle texture.
The development of the fungus is heavily dictated by environmental factors, specifically high moisture and moderate temperatures.
