Normandina (Normandina) is a genus of lichens that is often confused with plant diseases by amateur gardeners. It is crucial to clarify that this organism is not a parasite. It acts as an epiphyte, utilizing the bark of trees, mosses, or decaying wood merely as a physical substrate for anchoring, without extracting nutrients or damaging the plant tissues.
The organism is a complex symbiosis between a fungal partner and an algal partner. The most well-known species, Normandina pulchella, is recognized by its small, rounded, scale-like structures, which are typically olive-green to gray in color. These squamules have distinctive upturned margins, giving the colony a unique, cup-like appearance when viewed under magnification.
Normandina thrives in environments characterized by high atmospheric humidity, clean air, and stable, long-standing surfaces. It is most frequently observed on the trunks and branches of mature deciduous trees in old-growth forests, botanical gardens, and humid landscapes where bark turnover is slow and chemical intervention is absent.
While Normandina is not inherently harmful to plants, its presence is a clear indicator of the environmental conditions of the site. A dense colonization might suggest high humidity levels or a lack of tree maintenance. It does not cause direct disease, but its dense growth may indirectly shelter certain insect pests or retain excess moisture on the bark surface.
Protective measures are generally unnecessary for the health of the tree, as the lichen is ecologically harmless. However, for aesthetic purposes or to prevent the potential shelter of harmful insects, one may employ the following management practices:
- Mechanical removal of lichens from the bark using a soft wire brush.
- Improving air circulation and sunlight penetration through selective pruning.
- Applying dormant sprays, such as lime sulfur or ferrous sulfate, to the bark during the early spring to promote tree sanitation.
