Nosema apis is a unicellular microsporidian parasite that causes a widespread infectious disease in honey bees known as nosemosis. While this is a disease of insects rather than plants, it is of paramount importance to agronomy due to the essential role that honey bees play in the pollination of diverse agricultural crops.

The pathogen primarily infects the epithelial cells of the honey bee midgut. The spores of the parasite are extremely resilient and can survive for prolonged periods in the environment, particularly within contaminated combs, hives, and pollen stores, which makes the disease highly contagious among foraging insects.

The characteristic symptoms of a Nosema apis infection include dysentery-like fecal spots on the hive entrance, a reduction in the lifespan of worker bees, and a failure of the colony to thrive during the spring season. In advanced stages, colonies show significant population decline, often leading to total loss of productivity.

The disease development is heavily influenced by environmental factors such as cold and damp winters, which confine bees to the hive for extended periods, and poor-quality food supplies like honeydew honey. These conditions facilitate the rapid spread of spores through the hive environment via direct contact and fecal contamination of food sources.

Effective management requires a proactive approach including regular replacement of old combs, ensuring proper ventilation in hives, and providing supplemental feeding with healthy stores.
