Description

Pebrine is a highly destructive infectious disease affecting the silkworm Bombyx mori, caused by the microsporidian parasite Nosema bombycis. In the context of agricultural studies, this disease is categorized under sericulture, as it leads to total losses of silk production due to the mortality of insect colonies.

The pathogen is an intracellular parasite that invades all tissues of the silkworm, including the gut, silk glands, and reproductive organs. As the infection progresses, the parasite produces large numbers of spores, which are the primary means of transmission within the silkworm rearing environment.

Symptoms of the disease are characterized by the appearance of dark, irregular spots on the larvae, stunted growth, and general lethargy. Heavily infected larvae often die prematurely, while those that complete the pupal stage may emerge as deformed or infertile moths, continuing the cycle of infection through contaminated eggs.

Environmental conditions play a crucial role in the development and spread of Nosema bombycis. High humidity, poor ventilation, and overcrowded conditions significantly exacerbate the spread of the pathogen. Once introduced into a rearing facility, the disease spreads rapidly via contaminated bedding, rearing trays, and human handling.

Since there is no curative treatment for pebrine, management relies exclusively on rigorous preventive measures. This includes the mandatory microscopic inspection of mother moths and eggs before incubation. All infected batches must be destroyed to ensure the health of the entire colony and prevent massive economic losses.
