Nosema ceranae
Description
Nosema ceranae is a single-celled microsporidian parasite that causes a severe disease in honey bees known as nosemosis. While not a plant disease, this pathogen is vital to agricultural science due to the role of honey bees in global food production and the pollination of essential agricultural crops.
The pathogen primarily infects the epithelial lining of the bee's midgut. By interfering with the absorption of nutrients, it leads to premature aging of individual bees and a rapid decline in the overall strength of the colony, often resulting in sudden population crashes during the active foraging season.
Symptoms of an infection include a gradual depletion of adult bee populations, poor spring buildup of colonies, and sometimes a complete abandonment of the hive. Unlike older strains of Nosema, Nosema ceranae infections may not present with visible dysentery, making early field identification difficult without professional microscopic examination.
The spread of the infection is facilitated by the close proximity of bees within the hive. Spores are easily transmitted through contaminated feces, shared food stores, and beekeeping equipment. Environmental conditions, including temperature fluctuations and nutritional stress, significantly influence the speed at which the infection propagates through a colony.
Managing this disease requires rigorous biosecurity and maintenance practices. Preventing massive losses involves ensuring colonies have sufficient nutrition, reducing environmental stress, and maintaining clean equipment.
