Nosema chaetocnemae is a microsporidian parasite that specifically infects insects, particularly species within the Chaetocnema genus, commonly known as flea beetles. It is categorized as an entomopathogenic organism rather than a plant pathogen, playing a crucial role in the natural regulation of insect pest populations in agricultural landscapes.
The causal agent is an intracellular protozoan parasite that invades the host’s tissues. The resulting infection, known as nosemosis, disrupts the physiological processes of the flea beetle. The parasite exploits the host's cellular resources for its own reproduction, leading to systemic weakness and eventual mortality of the insect.
The primary hosts of this pathogen are various flea beetle species that cause damage to cruciferous crops, cereals, and vegetables.
