Description

Nosemosis is a widespread infectious disease affecting adult honey bees, caused by microsporidian parasites of the family Nosematidae. Specifically, the species Nosema apis and Nosema ceranae are the primary agents. While not a plant disease, it is a critical topic in agronomy due to the dependence of many crops on honey bee pollination services.

The causative agents are intracellular parasites that inhabit the epithelial cells of the midgut in honey bees. When spores are ingested, they germinate in the insect's gut, penetrate the cell lining, and proliferate rapidly. This infection disrupts the digestive function, leading to the destruction of intestinal cells and a significant decline in the bee's lifespan.

Symptoms of nosemosis often become visible after the wintering period or during periods of stress. Affected bees may appear lethargic, show a distended abdomen, or crawl in front of the hive entrance unable to fly. A diagnostic hallmark of this disease is the presence of yellow-brown fecal spots on the combs, entrance boards, and hive components, caused by severe dysentery.

Conditions that favor the development of the disease include high humidity inside the hive, cold and damp winters, and the use of poor-quality feed, such as honeydew honey. The infection spreads rapidly within the colony as healthy bees clean the contaminated feces and debris from infected cells, ensuring the continuous cycle of parasite transmission.

The impact of nosemosis on beekeeping is severe, manifesting in poor spring buildup, low honey production, and potential colony collapse. Weakened colonies are less effective at gathering nectar and may eventually die off, which significantly reduces the pollination efficiency of local agricultural fields and orchards.

  • Provide high-quality floral honey or sugar syrup for winter stores.
  • Maintain dry and well-ventilated hives to prevent moisture buildup.
  • Perform regular disinfection of woodenware and hive components.
  • Replace older combs annually to reduce the accumulation of spores.
  • Monitor colony strength and use veterinarian-approved treatments if necessary.
