Nothophoma is a fungal disease affecting various plant species, caused by members of the Nothophoma genus. As a pathogen, it belongs to the group of deuteromycetes, frequently impacting both agricultural crops and ornamental plants, significantly disrupting their growth cycles and leading to reduced biomass and yield quality.
The host range for this pathogen primarily includes species within the Asteraceae family and several other herbaceous plants. The disease affects various parts of the plant, including stems, foliage, and sometimes the root system, with the severity and specific symptoms often depending on the host species and local environmental conditions.
Typical symptoms involve the formation of necrotic spots, which gradually expand and cause tissue death. As the disease progresses, one can often observe the development of pycnidia—minute, dark-colored fruiting bodies of the fungus—visible on the surface of the lesions. Severe infestations lead to plant organ deformation, chlorosis, and in many cases, the total collapse of the affected plant.
The development and spread of Nothophoma are heavily influenced by high humidity and moderate temperatures, which are common during spring and autumn. The fungal spores are easily disseminated by water splashes, wind, and movement of contaminated soil or plant debris. These factors make the pathogen particularly aggressive in dense planting environments where air circulation is restricted.
Effective disease management relies on an integrated approach: selecting disease-free seeds and seedlings, implementing proper crop rotation, and strictly removing infected plant residues from the field. Preventive applications of fungicides are recommended in high-risk zones, alongside maintaining optimal water management and adequate plant spacing to minimize stress and favor air movement.
