Phoma leaf spot, caused by the fungus Nothophoma gossypiicola, is a significant disease affecting cotton plants worldwide. This pathogen specifically targets the foliage and stems, often leading to premature defoliation and reduced yield quality in cotton production.
The host range is primarily limited to cotton (Gossypium species). The fungus infects seedlings, leaves, and bolls. When conditions are favorable, the infection can become systemic or lead to significant damage to the plant structure, potentially impacting the fiber development and the overall health of the crop.
The symptoms of the disease appear as small, circular, or irregular lesions on the leaf surface. Initially, these spots are brownish in color, but as they expand, the centers may become grayish or tan, surrounded by a distinct dark margin. Close inspection reveals small, dark, pimple-like structures known as pycnidia, which are characteristic of the Nothophoma genus.
Environmental factors play a critical role in the epidemiology of Nothophoma gossypiicola. The pathogen thrives in humid and rainy conditions, which facilitate the dispersal of conidia via splashing water and wind.
