Nothophytophthora is a genus of plant pathogenic oomycetes that has gained significant attention in recent years due to its role in forest and ornamental tree decline. These pathogens are phylogenetically distinct from Phytophthora species, yet they exhibit similar parasitic behavior, often causing severe root and crown damage.

The host range for these pathogens includes various woody species, such as alder, beech, and different fruit trees. They are frequently identified as significant drivers of ecosystem imbalance, causing large-scale mortality in forest stands and affecting nursery production by compromising the root systems of juvenile plants.

Symptoms of an infection are typically characterized by necrotic lesions on the stem base, stunted growth, and canopy thinning. Affected trees often show signs of water stress, such as wilting and premature leaf senescence, as the pathogen impairs the plant's ability to uptake water and nutrients through the compromised root system.

Environmental conditions, particularly water saturation and high soil humidity, are critical for the spread of Nothophytophthora. The zoospores produced by these organisms are motile and utilize water films to migrate between hosts, making nurseries with poor irrigation management or flooding history particularly susceptible to major outbreaks.

Effective management requires an integrated approach starting with strict phytosanitary measures. Prevention is essential, as once the soil is contaminated, the pathogen is extremely difficult to eradicate. Growers should implement rigorous sanitation protocols, ensure proper drainage, and apply targeted chemical treatments where permissible to suppress pathogen activity and prevent further dispersion.
