Nothophytophthora caduca is a pathogenic oomycete that belongs to a genus closely related to the well-known Phytophthora species. This soil-borne pathogen is recognized for its ability to cause severe root system damage, leading to the decline and mortality of various woody plant species in both natural forest settings and managed nurseries.
The primary hosts of this organism include several species within the alder family, though its potential host range may extend to other deciduous trees found in moist environments. The pathogen specifically targets the fine roots, compromising the tree's ability to uptake water and nutrients, which eventually leads to system-wide failure.
Common symptoms of infection include chlorosis of the leaves, sparse canopy density, and premature leaf drop. As the disease progresses, necrotic lesions often appear on the lower trunk and root collar. These lesions may girdle the tree, effectively cutting off the flow of nutrients and water, which manifests as wilting even when soil moisture levels appear sufficient.
The development and spread of Nothophytophthora caduca are strongly correlated with excessive soil moisture and poor drainage. The pathogen produces motile zoospores that navigate through saturated soil water to reach new root tips. Movement is facilitated by rainfall runoff, flood events, and human activity, such as moving contaminated soil via machinery or tools.
Managing this disease requires a rigorous phytosanitary approach, as curative chemical treatments for mature trees are largely ineffective. Effective prevention strategies should focus on the following:

- Improving soil drainage to prevent long-term saturation.
- Sanitizing footwear and equipment when moving between different sites.
