This organism acts as a soil-borne pathogen primarily targeting the root systems of various woody species. As a close relative of Phytophthora, it shares similar ecological niches but is distinguished by the production of robust chlamydospores, which allow it to endure harsh environmental conditions and survive in soil for extended periods.
The pathogen mainly affects forest trees, though its host range can extend to nursery-grown shrubs and other woody ornamentals. By attacking the fine root hairs, the pathogen compromises the plant's ability to uptake nutrients and water. Because the infection starts underground, the disease is often undetected until the plant shows severe symptoms of stress, making management challenging.
Symptoms of Nothophytophthora chlamydospora infection typically manifest as canopy thinning, leaf chlorosis, and premature senescence. Affected plants often exhibit reduced vigor and stunted growth compared to healthy specimens.
