The disease is caused by the oomycete Nothophytophthora valdiviana, a member of the recently classified genus Nothophytophthora. This pathogen is distinct from the traditional Phytophthora species but shares similar pathogenic behaviors, specifically targeting the root systems and lower stems of susceptible hosts. It is primarily characterized as a destructive root and collar rot disease that leads to systemic plant decline.
Susceptible hosts primarily include species within the Nothofagus genus, which are essential components of forest ecosystems. However, the risk extends to other plants cultivated in high-humidity nursery environments. The pathogen's ability to survive in diverse soil conditions makes it a significant threat to young plantations and forest regeneration projects where host susceptibility is high.
Symptoms of Nothophytophthora valdiviana infection manifest as gradual crown dieback, chlorosis, and wilting. Upon closer inspection of the collar area, one may observe necrotic lesions and bark cracking. Beneath the necrotic bark, the cambium layer exhibits dark staining, indicating that the pathogen has compromised the plant's vascular integrity, effectively cutting off nutrient and water transport from the roots to the foliage.
The development and spread of the disease are highly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high soil moisture and moderate temperatures. The pathogen produces zoospores that require saturated soil to swim and locate host roots. Once a susceptible host is found, the pathogen penetrates the tissues, eventually forming resistant oospores that can persist in the soil for extended periods, even in the absence of a host.
Management and prevention require a proactive approach to nursery and forest health. Since there is no simple cure for established infections, focus must be placed on preventing the introduction of the pathogen into clean environments. Recommended practices include:
