Nothorhytisma is a fungal pathogen belonging to the Ascomycota group, primarily responsible for causing leaf spot diseases in various deciduous tree species. This pathogen is known for its specialized ability to infect leaf tissue, eventually forming characteristic dark, hardened stromata. Although it may not always kill the host plant outright, the stress caused by defoliation significantly reduces plant vitality and overall growth.
The causative agent persists as mycelium or reproductive structures within fallen leaves throughout the winter. When environmental conditions turn favorable in spring—typically triggered by rising temperatures and rainfall—the fungus produces spores that are dispersed by wind and water splashes to newly developed leaves.
