Ochraceocephala is a genus of fungi recognized as a pathogen responsible for specific plant diseases, most notably impacting pistachio orchards. The infection caused by this fungus can lead to severe physiological stress in host plants, manifesting as lesions and tissue necrosis that impede normal development.
The primary hosts affected by this pathogen include various fruit and nut-bearing species, with extensive research focused on Ochraceocephala foeniculi and its impact on pistachio trees. The fungus interferes with the plant’s nutrient transport systems, leading to localized dieback and a significant reduction in fruit yield.
Symptoms of the infection typically include the appearance of yellow to light brown lesions on leaves and young stems. As the infection progresses, the characteristic ochre-colored sporulation structures of the fungus become visible on the surface of the diseased tissue. Over time, the affected areas dry out, crack, and eventually become brittle.
