Ochrolechia is a genus of crustose lichens that often colonize the bark of trees and shrubs. While these organisms are epiphytes and do not directly parasitize the host plant's tissues, their presence is frequently linked to neglected or aging orchards. In an agricultural context, while they are not a plant disease in the sense of fungal pathogens, they are often considered a sign of poor tree vigor.

These lichens commonly affect a wide range of woody plants, including apple, pear, and various ornamental trees. They tend to settle on the bark of mature trees, especially those that show signs of slow growth or have rough, fissured bark textures. Younger trees with active, expanding bark are usually resistant to colonization by these organisms.

The primary symptom of Ochrolechia is the appearance of thick, crust-like thalli on the trunk and scaffold branches. These can range in color from off-white to yellowish-grey. In many species, small, saucer-shaped apothecia (fruiting bodies) can be observed, which are diagnostic features of this genus. Over time, these patches can merge, creating a significant crust that masks the actual condition of the bark.

The development and spread of Ochrolechia are highly dependent on environmental factors, specifically high humidity and low light levels within the canopy. Orchards that lack proper pruning and airflow are hotspots for lichen growth. Furthermore, as trees lose their capacity for rapid expansion due to age or stress, the bark becomes a stable, long-term substrate for these lichen colonies.

To mitigate the impact of Ochrolechia, it is essential to focus on overall orchard hygiene. Effective control measures include:

  • Regular pruning to improve air circulation and sunlight penetration.
  • Manual removal of lichen crusts using soft brushes or scraping tools during the dormant season.
  • Applying whitewash to the trunks to prevent further colonization and protect the bark from sunscald.
  • Implementing fertilization programs to improve the tree's growth rate and bark renewal.
