Description

Eyespot is a significant fungal disease of cereals, specifically wheat, barley, and rye, caused by the pathogens Oculimacula yallundae and Oculimacula acuformis. The disease is characterized by lesions at the base of the stem, often resulting in premature ripening, stunted growth, and severe lodging, which makes harvesting extremely difficult.

The primary hosts of the pathogen are wheat and barley, though other small grains can be affected. The fungus attacks the leaf sheaths near the soil surface and eventually penetrates the stem walls. This tissue destruction interferes with the plant's ability to transport water and essential nutrients, causing substantial losses in both grain yield and quality.

The hallmark symptom of this disease is the appearance of eye-shaped lesions on the lower stem internodes. These lesions feature a dark brown margin with a pale center, often containing grayish fungal growth in humid conditions. As the disease progresses, the stem tissue weakens significantly, leading to lodging, where plants bend or break at the base under their own weight.

Conditions favoring the development of the disease include cool, moist weather during the autumn and spring, which allows the fungus to spread rapidly within the crop. The pathogen survives between seasons on infected crop residues buried in the soil or on volunteers. High plant density and continuous cropping systems significantly exacerbate the risk of an outbreak.

Effective management requires an integrated approach. Cultural practices such as crop rotation, which breaks the pathogen life cycle, are essential. Additionally, selecting varieties with improved genetic resistance and timely application of systemic fungicides during the early stem elongation stages are the primary strategies for controlling the disease and minimizing economic losses.
