Odontella (lat. Odontella) is a genus of marine diatoms that, under specific agricultural conditions—particularly in hydroponic systems—can behave as an invasive agent, causing significant stress to plant root systems. While these diatoms occur naturally, their uncontrolled proliferation in artificial nutrient solutions disrupts the rhizosphere environment, leading to impaired plant health.
The nature of this condition is classified as biological environment degradation. As a type of algae, Odontella thrives in nutrient-rich aquatic environments exposed to light. Its presence does not represent a traditional fungal infection but rather a parasitic ecological imbalance that hinders root respiration and nutrient uptake through mechanical colonization of the roots.
Vegetable crops such as lettuce, basil, and greenhouse tomatoes are the primary hosts for this phenomenon. When the root system is covered by algal mats, the plant suffers from reduced oxygen availability, which is critical in hydroponics. This ultimately leads to significant crop loss and reduced yield quality due to metabolic imbalances in the plant tissues.
Symptoms of an infestation include the visible appearance of green or brown slime on the root surface, substrate, or inside irrigation pipes. Affected plants often display signs of nitrogen or phosphorus deficiency, yellowing of lower leaves (chlorosis), and stunted growth. The roots themselves may appear discolored, slimy, and physically restricted by the algal biofilm.
Effective management requires strict environmental control. Producers should ensure that nutrient tanks are opaque to block light, preventing algal growth. Periodic sanitation of irrigation lines with non-toxic sanitizers and the implementation of ultraviolet (UV) sterilization systems for water circulation are essential for prevention. Maintaining a balanced nutrient temperature and optimizing pH levels can also significantly reduce the risk of an outbreak.
