Odontotrema firmatum is a fungal species belonging to the order Helotiales that acts as a pathogen affecting the bark of woody plants. While it often functions as a secondary invader on weakened trees, it can cause significant damage to the structural integrity of the bark, particularly in various willow (Salix) species.

The disease is classified as a bark necrosis. The fungal pathogen penetrates the periderm of the host, colonizing the tissues. As the infection progresses, it disrupts the tree's ability to transport nutrients, leading to localized tissue death and the formation of characteristic necrotic lesions on the surface of branches or trunks.

Symptoms are often subtle in the early stages, manifesting as discolored, sunken areas of bark. Over time, these areas may crack. In moist conditions, tiny dark apothecia—the sexual reproductive structures of the fungus—appear along the cracks or on the surface of the dead bark, signaling advanced colonization.

Environmental conditions favorable for Odontotrema firmatum include high humidity and shaded, poorly ventilated areas. The fungus thrives where moisture persists on the bark surface for extended periods. Dissemination of spores primarily occurs via wind and splash-dispersal during rainfall, making spread rapid in dense forest stands or nurseries.

Proper cultural practices, including selective thinning to improve air circulation and pruning of affected branches, are essential.
