Description

The Odontotremataceae family belongs to the order Ostropales and represents a group of Ascomycete fungi. While many species within this family are primarily saprotrophic, living on decaying wood, some can act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the structural integrity and health of living trees.

The disease mechanism involves the colonization of the bark and cambium layers. The fungus produces small, cup-shaped fruiting bodies known as apothecia, which often emerge through the periderm. These structures are essential for the dispersal of spores and are a key diagnostic feature for mycologists identifying the infection.

Host plants typically include a variety of deciduous and coniferous trees, including species of willow, poplar, and alder. The impact is most severe in young, stressed, or poorly maintained trees in forests, ornamental gardens, and nurseries where microclimates allow for prolonged moisture retention.

Signs of infestation include the appearance of small, distinct fungal fruiting bodies on the bark surface, often accompanied by localized bark necrosis. As the disease progresses, the cambium may die, causing the bark to crack, peel away, or turn dark, ultimately leading to the decline and death of the affected branch or stem.

Developmental conditions for these fungi are highly dependent on humidity. High levels of atmospheric moisture and poor air circulation are the primary drivers of spore germination and mycelial spread. Trees suffering from mechanical wounds, nutrient deficiencies, or drought are significantly more susceptible to successful colonization by Odontotremataceae.
