Oedogonium algae

Oedogoniomycetaceae is a family of filamentous green algae that, in an agricultural context, can act as a significant nuisance by inhibiting plant growth. Often misidentified as a fungal pathogen, these algae form dense mats on substrates and plant surfaces, creating an environment that negatively impacts crop physiology.

The causative agents are species from the Oedogoniales order, which thrive in moist, nutrient-rich environments. They do not parasitize tissues directly, but their presence acts as a physical barrier. This phenomenon is classified as an ecological or environmental disorder, where the dense algal growth competes with the crop for light, space, and mineral nutrients.

These organisms primarily affect plants grown in hydroponic systems, vertical farms, and greenhouses with high humidity levels. Any plant that relies on moist substrates like rockwool, perlite, or coconut coir is susceptible to colonization, especially when nutrient solutions are exposed to direct light for extended periods.

Symptoms of an Oedogonium infestation include a bright green, slimy film covering the substrate surface and the base of the plant stem. As the biomass increases, it creates a lack of oxygen in the root zone (hypoxia), causing the plant to yellow, lose vigor, wilt, and eventually die if the condition is not addressed immediately.

• Maintaining optimal water pH levels;
• Improving air circulation to dry out surface layers;
• Using algae-resistant covers for hydroponic trays.

The economic damage is primarily linked to stunted growth and loss of seedlings in high-density production environments. Prevention is the most effective management strategy; however, in severe cases, growers may need to use food-grade hydrogen peroxide or specific algaecides to eliminate the algal mats without harming the host crop.
