Description

Oidiodendron is a genus of anamorphic fungi belonging to the Ascomycota division. In agriculture, these fungi are identified as soil-borne pathogens capable of causing root rot and systemic infections. While some species function as saprotrophs, others act as opportunistic parasites, targeting plants that are already under physiological stress or growing in poorly drained, organic-rich substrates.

The host range includes various vegetable seedlings, berry bushes, and tree saplings. Oidiodendron is particularly problematic in greenhouse environments where peat-based growing media are used. Because it can survive as a saprotroph, the fungus is highly resilient and remains present in the environment even in the absence of a primary host plant.

Symptoms of an Oidiodendron infection typically involve root browning, decay of the root system, and a characteristic grayish fungal growth at the base of the stem. As the disease progresses, the plant exhibits symptoms of water stress—such as wilting, yellowing (chlorosis), and stunted growth—due to the pathogen's interference with nutrient and water uptake.

The development of this pathogen is favored by cool to moderate temperatures and high moisture levels. Its spores, known as conidia, are easily spread through irrigation water, splashing soil, and contaminated tools. The ability of the fungus to produce resilient chlamydospores ensures its long-term survival in the soil, making eradication difficult.

Effective management and prevention strategies include the following practices:

  • Sterilizing growing media before planting to eliminate initial inoculum.
  • Improving soil drainage and airflow to prevent excessive moisture levels.
  • Applying beneficial biological control agents, such as Trichoderma species, to suppress fungal growth.
  • Sanitizing all equipment and tools used in planting and maintenance to prevent cross-contamination.
