Description

The causal agent of this disease is the microscopic fungus Oidium ericinum, which belongs to the powdery mildew group. It is an obligate parasite that thrives on the surface of plant tissues, using specialized structures called haustoria to penetrate cells and extract essential nutrients for its growth.

The primary hosts for this pathogen are members of the Ericaceae family, particularly various species and cultivars of heather (Erica). The infection typically targets younger, more succulent shoots, leaves, and flower buds, significantly impairing the plant's health and aesthetic appeal.

The most visible symptom of the infection is the appearance of a white, felt-like powdery coating on the surface of leaves and stems. As the fungus progresses, the mycelium becomes denser, often causing the underlying plant tissue to yellow, twist, and eventually wither away prematurely.

The development of Oidium ericinum is favored by moderate temperatures and high humidity levels, as well as poor air circulation within the canopy. The fungal spores are easily dispersed by wind, splashing water during irrigation, or by contact with contaminated gardening tools, facilitating rapid spread.
