Oidium neolycopersici is a highly specialized fungal pathogen that causes powdery mildew in tomato plants. This obligate parasite infects the leaves, stems, and occasionally fruits, creating a characteristic white, powdery appearance which consists of fungal mycelium and conidia spores.

The host range is primarily focused on the Solanaceae family. While tomatoes are the most affected crop, particularly in greenhouse environments, the fungus can also infect peppers, eggplants, and various weeds that act as alternate hosts, allowing the disease to persist between cropping cycles.

Early symptoms include small, pale chlorotic spots on the leaves. As the pathogen matures, these spots expand into circular white patches that eventually coalesce, covering the entire leaf surface. Severe infections lead to leaf yellowing, tissue necrosis, early senescence, and a significant reduction in overall crop yield.

Environmental conditions play a critical role in the development of the disease. Powdery mildew thrives in moderate temperatures ranging from 20°C to 25°C and high relative humidity levels, which are often found in stagnant greenhouse air. The rapid spread occurs through airborne spores, which easily move between plants via irrigation, handling, or insects.
