Description

Poinsettia powdery mildew is a widespread fungal disease caused by the pathogen Oidium poinsettiae. As an obligate parasite, it specifically targets the poinsettia (Euphorbia pulcherrima), thriving in commercial greenhouse environments where humidity and air circulation can be difficult to regulate, leading to significant economic impacts for growers.

The disease primarily affects the foliage and bracts of the poinsettia plant. The pathogen's mycelium grows on the surface of the plant tissues, extracting nutrients directly from the epidermal cells. If left unmanaged, the infection can rapidly spread throughout the entire crop, compromising the structural integrity and aesthetic quality of the plants.

The characteristic symptom of the disease is a white, dusty or powdery fungal growth that appears on the leaf surfaces. Initially, these spots are small and isolated, but they expand and coalesce as the infection progresses. Severe infestations lead to leaf chlorosis, premature senescence, curling, and distortion of the plant, which often results in the entire plant becoming unsalable.

The development of Oidium poinsettiae is heavily influenced by environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity and temperatures ranging between 20°C and 25°C. Stagnant air and crowding of plants allow spores to settle and germinate easily. Once established, the fungus can produce new generations of spores within a very short timeframe.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to plant health:

  • Optimize greenhouse ventilation to keep foliage dry and reduce humidity levels.
  • Maintain proper spacing between plants to improve airflow and reduce microclimate hotspots.
  • Apply preventative or curative fungicide treatments such as sulfur-based products or systemic fungicides.
  • Regularly monitor the crop and promptly isolate or remove any plants showing early symptoms to prevent widespread contamination.
