Oidium tingitaninum
Description
The causal agent of this disease is the fungus Oidium tingitaninum, a specialized pathogen belonging to the Erysiphales order. It operates as an obligate parasite, extracting nutrients from the host plant's epidermal cells via haustoria while leaving most of its mycelial structure on the surface.
This fungus primarily infects citrus species, including lemons, oranges, and mandarins. It is particularly problematic in nursery environments, greenhouse production, and subtropical orchard settings where high planting density and constant humidity facilitate the continuous development of the pathogen.
Symptoms of the disease are characterized by a white, powdery fungal growth appearing on young leaves, succulent shoots, and occasionally fruits. As the infection progresses, the leaves become stunted, distorted, and chlorotic. If left unchecked, these tissues eventually dry out and die, leading to premature defoliation of the tree.
The development of the fungus is favored by mild temperatures, typically between 18°C and 25°C, coupled with high humidity or poor air circulation. Spores are easily disseminated by wind or physical contact between trees, making it extremely difficult to isolate the infection once it has gained a foothold in a closed greenhouse system.
The economic impact of Oidium tingitaninum is significant, as it reduces both the vigor of the tree and the quality of the citrus harvest. Severe infestations severely curtail vegetative growth and can weaken the tree's immune system, making it more susceptible to secondary pests and environmental stressors over time.
