Olive spot, commonly identified as cladosporiosis, is a fungal disease caused by various species of the genus Cladosporium. This pathogen affects a diverse range of crops, including vegetables, fruits, and ornamental plants, causing significant economic losses in both intensive farming and greenhouse production systems.

The causative agents are filamentous fungi that colonize plant tissues, producing characteristic olive-green to dark brown sporulation. These spores serve as primary inoculum and are efficiently dispersed by wind, splashing rain, or irrigation systems, allowing the disease to spread rapidly across fields and cultivation facilities.

Symptoms typically begin as small chlorotic spots on leaves, which gradually expand into necrotic lesions covered by a velvet-like fungal mat. On infected fruits, the lesions often manifest as sunken, dark-colored spots that deteriorate the produce quality. Severe infections lead to premature defoliation and significant reduction in fruit yield and marketability.

The development of the disease is strictly dependent on environmental conditions, particularly high relative humidity (above 85%) and moderate temperatures. Persistent surface moisture on leaves or fruits provides the ideal substrate for conidial germination and colonization, making closed or poorly ventilated spaces highly susceptible to rapid outbreaks.

Effective management requires an integrated approach to minimize the survival and spread of the pathogen. Key strategies include enhancing field ventilation, applying strict hygiene by removing crop residues, utilizing resistant cultivars, and implementing a balanced fungicide program. Monitoring early symptoms is crucial for the timely application of control measures to prevent epidemic spread.
