Olivea tectonae is a pathogenic fungus that causes the condition known as teak rust. It belongs to the order Pucciniales (rust fungi) and acts as an obligate parasite of the teak tree (Tectona grandis). This disease is a significant concern for forestry managers and teak producers, as it directly impacts the vigor and growth performance of the trees.

The primary host for this fungus is Tectona grandis. The disease is distributed across major teak-growing regions in tropical Asia and has been reported in various international plantations where teak has been introduced. It can affect trees at various developmental stages, with nursery seedlings being particularly susceptible to severe outbreaks.

Symptoms are primarily observed on the foliage. The fungus manifests as numerous small, powdery, rust-colored pustules on the underside of the leaves. These pustules represent the uredinial stage of the fungal lifecycle. In severe cases, the infected leaves become chlorotic, wither, and drop prematurely, which disrupts the tree’s energy production and overall development.

Environmental conditions play a decisive role in the spread of teak rust. High relative humidity and warm temperatures, typical of tropical monsoon climates, promote the germination and dissemination of spores. Wind-borne spores can travel long distances, leading to rapid infection across entire plantations, especially during periods of frequent rainfall.

The impact of this disease on forestry operations is substantial, including reduced timber yield and stunted growth of young trees. Effective management and control strategies are essential for maintaining plantation health:
