Oliveonia is a genus of fungi belonging to the Basidiomycota phylum. In agronomic pathology, species within this genus are known to act as opportunistic pathogens that contribute to root rot and collar rot complexes, particularly in humid agricultural environments, affecting both commercial crops and greenhouse ornamentals.
The host range of this pathogen is quite diverse, often targeting vegetables, cereals, and nursery stocks. The disease is primarily a problem for plants grown in intensive systems where soil moisture and temperature are kept consistently high, creating a niche for the fungus to colonize roots and stems efficiently.
The clinical symptoms involve the darkening and tissue degradation of the root system, which eventually leads to chlorosis and wilting of the aerial parts of the plant. As the vascular tissue becomes clogged by fungal hyphae, the plant loses its ability to transport water, causing rapid collapse and death.
Environmental conditions are the key driver for the development of Oliveonia infections. Poor soil aeration, waterlogging, and high humidity levels are critical factors that facilitate the rapid proliferation of the mycelium. The disease can persist in the soil for extended periods, making crop rotation difficult if not managed properly.

If an infection is detected, the application of targeted fungicides and the implementation of biological control agents that inhibit fungal growth can help mitigate the economic losses in infected crops.
