The Oliveoniaceae family encompasses various basidiomycete fungi that, while often saprotrophic, can behave as opportunistic plant pathogens under specific conditions. They are known for inhabiting soil environments and colonizing the rhizosphere, where they can interfere with the nutrient uptake and physiological health of plants.

The pathogen typically initiates infection through the root system. The disease is generally categorized as a form of root rot or basal stem rot. Once the fungus penetrates the root tissue, it secretes degradative enzymes that liquefy the internal structures, effectively disrupting the transport of water and nutrients throughout the plant.
