Description

The Omphalotaceae family comprises a group of fungi that are primarily recognized in forestry and agronomy as agents of wood decay. While many are saprotrophic, playing a crucial role in nutrient cycling, some species can act as pathogens that weaken living trees, particularly those already stressed by environmental factors.

The causal agents are basidiomycete fungi. They reproduce and disseminate primarily through spores, which are spread by air currents or vectors such as insects. Infection typically occurs when spores land on fresh wounds, pruning cuts, or bark fissures, allowing the mycelium to penetrate the host's woody tissue.

These fungi affect a variety of woody plant species, including broad-leaved trees like oak, beech, olive, and various fruit-bearing orchard trees. In domestic and commercial gardens, they are frequently found colonizing stumps, damaged roots, or hollow trunk sections of mature trees.

Infected trees often exhibit visible signs, such as the emergence of clusters of fruiting bodies near the base of the trunk or root system. Internally, the wood undergoes white rot, losing structural integrity and becoming fibrous and pale, which can lead to windthrow or premature tree collapse.

  • Maintain optimal tree vigor through balanced fertilization and irrigation.

If an infection is detected early, localized surgery of the decayed wood combined with chemical control may mitigate further damage, though complete eradication of established fungal colonies in mature trees is difficult to achieve.
