Omphalotus illudens, commonly known as the Jack-o'-lantern mushroom, is a lignicolous fungus that acts as a facultative parasite in agricultural and forest ecosystems. While primarily recognized for its bioluminescent properties, it serves as an agent of white rot, significantly impacting the health and structural integrity of hardwood trees and fruit-bearing orchards.

The pathogen attacks through compromised areas of the bark, such as frost cracks, pruning wounds, or root damage. Once the mycelium establishes itself within the host, it initiates a gradual breakdown of the wood's lignin and cellulose components, effectively hollowing out the tree from the inside over several years.

Host susceptibility includes a wide range of deciduous trees, with fruit species such as apples, pears, and stone fruits being particularly vulnerable if they are already weakened. The fungus flourishes in environments with high humidity and poor tree vigor, often serving as a secondary invader that accelerates the decline of neglected plants.

Symptoms become evident through the appearance of dense clusters of bright orange to yellowish fruiting bodies near the base of the trunk or root flare during autumn months. Internally, the wood exhibits bleaching and a stringy, fibrous texture, often accompanied by a distinct, faint glow at night caused by the bioluminescence of the mycelium.

Managing the spread of Omphalotus illudens requires a focus on plant health and sanitation:
