Description

Omphalotus olearius, commonly referred to as the Jack-o'-lantern mushroom, is essentially a wood-decaying fungus that acts as a facultative parasite on stressed or damaged woody plants. In an agronomic context, it is associated with the development of white rot, which degrades the structural integrity of the host plant by breaking down lignin and cellulose components of the wood.

This fungus typically attacks a range of trees, including olive trees, oaks, and various stone fruit species. It primarily targets the root system and the root collar, gaining entry through wounds caused by pruning, winter frost cracking, or insect activity, which compromises the tree’s natural defenses and creates an entry point for hyphal colonization.

The primary symptom of infestation is the appearance of bright orange, funnel-shaped fruiting bodies growing in large, dense clusters near the base of the trunk or on exposed roots. Internally, the infection manifests as a progressive rotting of the heartwood, which restricts water and nutrient transport, leading to canopy thinning, branch dieback, and eventually the death of the tree.

The development of Omphalotus olearius is favored by high humidity and the presence of decomposing woody debris. As the fungus relies on dead or dying organic matter as a substrate, it is most frequently found in orchards where old trees or stumps have not been properly removed, allowing the mycelium to persist and spread spores via wind and water splashes.

Management and prevention strategies focus on maintaining tree vigor and eliminating potential colonization sites within the orchard or garden:

  • Practice proper sanitation by removing dead wood and stumps from the orchard floor.
  • Protect tree trunks from mechanical damage during soil cultivation.
  • Apply fungicides or protective wound paints to pruning cuts and accidental damage.
  • Monitor trees regularly for the presence of fruiting bodies to remove them before sporulation occurs.
