Onygena corvina is a unique fungal species recognized for its ability to decompose keratin-rich substrates. While not a primary pathogen of living crops, it plays a significant role in the soil ecosystem and the breakdown of animal-derived organic materials often found in fields treated with non-composted manures.
The causal agent is a specialized keratinophilic fungus. It secretes potent enzymes known as keratinases, which degrade hard animal proteins such as hair, feathers, and horns. This biological activity is essential for nutrient cycling in nature but can indicate inefficient decomposition processes when observed in excessive amounts in managed agricultural lands.
Symptoms of its presence include the appearance of distinct, small, stalked, or capitate fruiting bodies developing directly on decomposed animal debris. The fungus typically colonizes organic patches within the soil or in compost piles. When the environment is rich in substrate, the fungus forms dense mycelial networks that are visible upon close inspection of soil organic matter.
