Description

Rice oosporosis is a fungal disease caused by the pathogen Oospora oryzetorum. This fungus is a significant threat to rice production, as it colonizes plant tissues and disrupts vital physiological functions, eventually leading to stunted growth and yield reduction.

The primary host for this pathogen is the rice plant (Oryza sativa). The fungus targets foliage, stems, and panicles. By penetrating plant cells, the pathogen extracts nutrients and produces enzymes that cause tissue decay, which interferes with the plant's ability to undergo normal photosynthesis and nutrient transport.

Symptoms of the infection manifest as discoloration and spots on the leaves and panicles, followed by the appearance of a fungal mycelium mat. As the disease progresses, these areas become necrotic and brittle. In severe cases, the panicles fail to develop, resulting in empty or shriveled grains, which significantly diminishes both crop quality and weight.

The disease thrives under environmental conditions characterized by high humidity and moderate to warm temperatures. Oospora oryzetorum spores can survive in contaminated soil and crop debris for extended periods. During the growing season, wind and irrigation water serve as the primary vectors for spreading the spores between plants.

Integrated pest management is the most effective strategy to mitigate the impact of oosporosis.

  • Implementation of certified seed treatments using systemic fungicides.
  • Rigorous field hygiene, including the removal or deep plowing of crop residues.
  • Application of foliar fungicides during the booting and flowering stages if environmental conditions favor disease development.
