Opalinea (lat. Opalinea) is a type of plant pathology caused by organisms within the Opalinida group. These microorganisms, traditionally studied as parasites of aquatic environments, can act as opportunistic pathogens that compromise the health of various plants, particularly those cultivated in hydroponic systems or high-humidity greenhouse conditions.
The causative agent operates as a specialized protist that colonizes intercellular spaces. By absorbing nutrients directly from the host, the pathogen disrupts normal cellular metabolic functions. Its ability to thrive in aquatic media makes it a significant risk factor for crops reliant on recirculating irrigation or hydroponic nutrient solutions.
Host crops typically include ornamental aquatic vegetation and specific greenhouse-grown vegetables. The pathogen often exploits environments where the balance of water quality and aeration has been compromised, leading to rapid proliferation across the entire crop population if left unmanaged.
Symptoms of the infection involve generalized chlorosis, stunted development, and the appearance of a thin, translucent film or mucus on the root structure.
