Opalinidae are a group of ciliated protists that, while traditionally associated with aquatic environments and vertebrate hosts, can interact with plant systems as pathogenic agents. In agricultural settings, they represent a subtle threat that exploits high-humidity environments to colonize host tissues and disrupt plant metabolic pathways.

The causative agent acts by infiltrating the intercellular spaces of leaves and stems. As a parasite, it feeds on plant secretions, leading to tissue chlorosis and necrosis.
