The infection process begins when spores of the fungus contact the cuticle of the host larva. Over time, the fungal mycelium colonizes the insect's body, replacing its internal tissues while maintaining the external structural integrity of the victim. This process effectively mummifies the host larva.

Symptoms of the infection manifest when the larva dies and the fungus produces a long, dark, stick-like stroma. This structure emerges from the larva's head and grows upwards through the soil, eventually appearing on the surface to release spores for further propagation.

The development of Ophiocordyceps robertsii is strictly dependent on specific environmental conditions, including high humidity and stable temperatures found in stable soil environments. These conditions are typically found in forest leaf litter rather than in open agricultural fields.
