Ophiocytium is a genus of yellow-green algae that can act as a stress factor for young plants when it colonizes the surface of growing media. While not a classical fungal pathogen, its rapid proliferation creates a dense film that restricts oxygen exchange and inhibits the normal physiological processes of young seedlings.
This biological agent primarily impacts greenhouse vegetable production and nursery stocks. Seedlings in high-humidity environments, including those cultivated in peat-based substrates or hydroponic systems, are particularly prone to colonization by these algal mats.
The visual signs of Ophiocytium infection include a characteristic yellow-green or slimy brown crust on the surface of the growing media. As the algae spread, they may wrap around the base of the stem, blocking vital root zone aeration and often leading to tissue necrosis, which may resemble "damping-off" disease.
The environmental triggers for Ophiocytium development include consistent waterlogging, poor drainage, and high nutrient availability in the substrate surface. High relative humidity coupled with constant light exposure in professional greenhouses provides the ideal conditions for these algae to thrive and outcompete young crop root systems.
Integrated pest management strategies are crucial for prevention. Key steps include maintaining optimal irrigation schedules, improving air circulation within the greenhouse, and regularly raking the substrate surface to break the algal mat. Additionally, maintaining proper soil pH and using specialized algaecides or hydrogen peroxide-based solutions can effectively manage infestations.
