Ophiodothella neurophila is a fungal pathogen primarily known for causing leaf spot diseases in various Ficus species. Belonging to the Ascomycota phylum, this fungus is highly specialized, targeting the vascular and interveinal tissues of leaves to obtain nutrients for its development.
The primary hosts for this pathogen are plants within the Ficus genus. While typically found in tropical environments where its hosts are native, the disease can also emerge in greenhouse environments or botanical nurseries if the microclimate provides sufficient moisture and temperature stability.
The most distinctive symptom is the development of necrotic lesions that often track along the leaf veins. As the infection progresses, these areas may turn yellow or brown, leading to tissue death. The undersides of affected leaves often display small, dark fruiting bodies (ascomata) that serve as the primary inoculum source for spreading spores to adjacent leaves.

The pathogen survives between growing seasons in fallen, infected leaves, which act as a reservoir for new infections if they are not promptly removed.

Management practices should focus on strict sanitation, such as removing and destroying infected leaf debris, improving air circulation to reduce humidity, and applying targeted fungicides when environmental conditions favor the spread of the fungus.
